18th April 2024 – Karen Street, accordion, at Chesterfield Jazz Club!

Andy Tweed andrewwtweed@icloud.com

Karen began playing the accordion by chance at the age of seven. Later she learnt to play clarinet and saxophone and consequently has had an unusual career encompassing many different genres. She was drawn back to the accordion and particularly to jazz when she was invited to join Make Westbrook’s big band.
Other jazz credits include Tim Garland’s Lammas, the Phil Robson Octet, Steve Arguelles, Tina May, Nikki Iles and Martin Taylor’s ‘Spirit of Django’ with Guy Barker’s jazz orchestra . A recent highlight was playing at Ronnie Scotts in Maria Schneider’s Big Band.

Karen’s debut CD “Finally a beginning”was released 2001 and received great reviews. Her reputation as a jazz accordionist and composer was firmly establishes with ‘Accordion Crimes’ her second CD, inspired by the book of the same name by E.Annie Proulx. Joining her on this album is Stan Sulzmann, Fred T Baker and Mike Outram. Karen’s third CD ‘Another Story’  was released in November 2008. A fourth album “Unfurled” under the name of, Streetworks featured Mike Outram, guitar, Will Harris, bass and Andy Tweed on saxophone.
She also has a Tango band, Carismàtico and a jazz quartet called L’esprit du Jazz.

“Street proves herself to be a thoughtful but vigorous soloist, intelligently exploiting the considerable textural possibilities of the instrument with great aplomb'”-Chris Parker

The combination of Karen Street’s lyrical compositions with her responsive and unique accordion playing is classy, spritely stuff.

Musicians who have given the accordion a genuine voice are rare, but Karen Street is undoubtedly among them. – Jazz UK

Together with her first CD Finally …..a beginning, Accordion Crimes cements Karen’s standing as one of the most evocative and dexterous accordionists in the country. Folk jazz at its unique best.

Chesterfield Jazz Club set to resume on 17th September, 2020.

Pat and I are excited to announce that we have been given the go-ahead to resume our monthly concerts from September 2020.

We are very excited to announce that Carl Orr, sublime guitarist who has worked with Billy Cobham and George Duke (check this out on YouTube) Our venue, The Olde House have made every effort to safeguard patrons during the tentative steps out of lockdown. Pat and I have visited the venue a couple of times to check with Julie the manager and we are confident that the room layout can safely accommodate an audience, distanced as per government guidelines. For those patrons not ready to join us in person, the concert will be streamed live via a multi-camera set up and tickets will be available both for the in-person concert and the live stream.

We’ve missed you and we can’t wait to welcome you back to the club again!

Welcome to 2020, new venue and piano!

HI folks….

Happy New Year! This year we welcome our guests to a new venue at a new time, at a new price and with new added benefits, such as our very own grand piano at the club.

The new venue, brought about by necessity but has left me wondering why I hadn’t thought of it before, is the Olde House on Loundsley Green Road.

It boasts lots of parking, a better drinks selection at the bar than our old venue, more private location so we won’t be disturbed by the other venue users, food on offer if anyone should care to partake…and, our very own grand piano. The piano used to be in Chesterfield Library and I have played it on several occasions….I’ve always found it to be a good solid instrument with a decent tone and good touch. It was an opportunity that was too good to miss.

Here is a pic of today’s shifting activities…

So…get your tickets today from http://www.ticketsource.co.uk/wendykirkland as it promises to be a very well attended event. Julie, the manager at the Olde House has been an excellent, proactive host – when Pat and I arrived today she’d already printed out the poster and created another announcing the start of regular monthly jazz…I hadn’t asked her to do that for us, so I was really impressed. I’m really looking forward to our new season.

See you soon, folks!

Wendy Kirkland to perform in Buxton

Buxton’s recently refurbished grand piano will be in the expert hands of two jazz pianists in the next few weeks.

Chesterfield’s Wendy Kirkland is taking her trio to the United Reformed Church on Saturday June 16. Wendy is touring a new show “Piano Divas” featuring the songs of Nina Simone, Diana Krall, Blossom Dearie and others.

A CD was released last year and got a rave review in The Observer where expert critic Dave Gelly wrote: “Wendy has a fully-fledged vocal style of her own… She plays proper jazz piano too and her excellent band has the settled in sound of a regular working unit… A very classy debut.”

Reviews of tour dates so far confirm that Wendy and the band are in top form. Tickets are just £10 and can be reserved by phoning Keith Savage, 01298 70705, or by email to whiteknowle@gmail.com. Doors open at 7.30pm.
